How Often Should You Repaint The Inside Of Your House?

A question homeowners often have is how long their interior paint should last before needing to be redone.

In my opinion, if your walls were properly prepared and painted with quality materials, you should be getting several good years out of them.

However, certain areas of your home naturally take more abuse than others.

How Long Does Interior Paint Typically Last?

Here are some general guidelines:

  • Bedrooms: Around 5 to 7 years, often longer in rooms with little traffic.

  • Living rooms: Around 5 to 7 years, depending on everyday use.

  • Hallways and staircases: Around 2 to 4 years in busy households.

  • Kitchens and bathrooms: Around 3 to 5 years, depending on moisture, ventilation, and cleaning.

  • Ceilings: Often 10 years or longer when properly maintained.

These are reasonable planning guidelines. Plenty of rooms will last longer.

Signs Your Walls Need Repainting

The first thing I look for is the overall condition of the walls.

Scuff marks around light switches, worn corners, fading, peeling paint, and visible drywall repairs are all signs that it might be time.

If you have children or pets, you’ll probably notice wear in hallways and common areas sooner than in bedrooms.

Can You Make Your Paint Last Longer?

Absolutely. A few simple habits can help:

  • Clean minor marks using a soft cloth and mild soap, following the paint manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Address leaks and moisture problems before they damage the finish.

  • Avoid aggressive scrubbing, especially on flat paint.

  • Repair small areas of drywall damage before they become larger problems.

I also recommend keeping a record of the paint color, brand, and finish used in each room. It makes future repairs and touch-ups much easier.

Our Recommendation

I wouldn’t repaint a perfectly good room just because a certain number of years have passed.

Take a good look at the walls. If the paint is holding up well and you’re happy with the color, there’s no reason to rush into another project.

When the walls do need attention, I recommend taking care of all the necessary repairs and repainting the entire affected wall for a more consistent finish.

A properly completed interior paint job should look good for years, and that’s exactly what I believe homeowners should expect.
